Don’t try to memorize all 46 basic characters at once. Instead, learn them in small groups of 5 characters at a time (あいうえお, かきくけこ, etc.). Master one group before moving to the next.
Simply looking at charts is not enough. Test yourself regularly by covering the romaji and trying to recall the sound, or covering the character and writing it from memory. Active recall is one of the most effective ways to lock information into long-term memory.
Writing the characters by hand helps you remember the stroke order and shape. Even writing each character a few times while saying the sound out loud improves retention significantly.
Listening to the correct pronunciation while learning is very important. Our free quiz includes audio so you can hear native-like pronunciation for every character.
Short daily practice is more effective than long study sessions once a week. Consistency is the key to mastering Hiragana quickly.
Practice both recognizing the character when you see it and producing it (typing or writing the correct romaji). Our main quiz focuses on production, while the multiple-choice practice page helps with recognition.
